As the year draws to a close, Zillertal’s winter season truly comes into its own: ski touring, winter hikes, and fascinating excursions into glittering ice caves await. Here, every day holds a little adventure of its own.
A stay at the Hotel Neue Post makes it wonderfully easy to see out the year in style – surrounded by snow-capped peaks and that unmistakable Alpine magic.
Winter in Zillertal is truly special. Skiers and snow-lovers can enjoy atmospheric ski tours and winter hikes through snow-covered landscapes, breathing in the crisp mountain air and savouring spectacular views. There’s plenty of excitement away from the pistes, too – the toboggan run at Gerlosstein offers exhilarating descents, and it stays open even on New Year’s Eve.
If you’re after something extraordinary to mark the turn of the year, visit the Natural Ice Palace on the Hintertux Glacier. Step inside and you enter a world of ice and crystal, wandering through corridors lined with shimmering blue walls and past crystal-clear formations. It feels like an adventure from another world.
As darkness falls on New Year’s Eve, the valley comes alive with fireworks – a mesmerising display of light and colour that illuminates the night sky.
If you enjoy tradition, try your hand at “tin pouring” (Bleigießen in German), a custom that never goes out of fashion. Simply melt the tin, pour it into cold water, and watch as it solidifies into imaginative shapes – perfect for a spot of interpretation and playful fortune-telling.
The New Year’s train offers another unforgettable experience. Board the festively decorated steam locomotive for an atmospheric journey from Jenbach to Mayrhofen, with charming musical receptions at stations along the way. Glass of sparkling wine in hand, you’ll toast the turn of the year on one of the most enchanting train rides you’re ever likely to take.
We wish you a very happy New Year, with good health, happiness, and perhaps even a holiday at the Hotel Neue Post in 2026. We look forward to seeing you soon!
