When the larches turn gold and mist settles in the valley, every hike becomes a photo opportunity. We’ll show you where to capture the best shots.
The alarm goes off while it’s still dark. A quick coffee, grab your camera, and you step into the crisp October air. Then the light arrives – the first rays crest the ridge, igniting the larches in molten gold. Autumn in Zillertal rewards those who hike not merely for the summit, but for every quiet detail the trail reveals along the way.
Golden light on the Ahorn Plateau
The Ahornbahn, Austria’s largest aerial tramway, whisks you up to almost 2,000 metres above sea level in a matter of minutes. At the top, a vast high plateau unfurls before you. On certain autumn days, you can catch the mist still pooling in the valley while the peaks are already bathed in sunlight. In October, the first cable car departs at 8:30 a.m. – just in time for your first shot.
The classic: the suspension bridge at the Olpererhütte hut
From the Schlegeis Reservoir, climb almost 600 metres on a well-maintained mountain trail, reaching the Olpererhütte mountain hut in around an hour and a half. Just beyond the hut, you’ll find one of the Alps’ most iconic photo spots: a narrow suspension bridge over turquoise water, with the glaciers of the Zillertal Alps rising sharply behind.
Golden larches in Stilluptal
Seeking a quieter corner? Then head to Stilluptal: golden larches, deep-green water, and scarcely another soul in sight. On still mornings, the mountains are reflected so perfectly in the Stillup Reservoir that you may need a second glance to tell which way is up.
Little tips for great photos
Either set out early or wait until late in the day – the soft autumn light sculpts the mountains far more gracefully than the midday sun. Include someone in the frame to convey scale and space. And dress warmly: the most rewarding shots are often to be found in the coolest and quietest spots.
Your base for an autumn behind the lens
Our team will be happy to tell you which trails are showing off their best colours, and which cable cars and mountain huts are still open. And when you return in the evening, the Hotel Neue Post’s rooftop pool is waiting. Have you packed your camera yet?
