07.09.2026 Harvest season in Zillertal
Culinary experiences in autumn

Alpine cheese, game dishes, and freshly harvested vegetables: autumn in Zillertal is a feast for the senses. Discover how nature’s treasures find their way to your plate.

A cool morning in Zillertal. A delicate mist lies upon the meadows, while above it, nature glows in gold and copper. On the farms, hands gather the last apples into baskets; in the Alpine dairies, wheels of cheese slowly mature; from the kitchens, the scent of spices and braised game drifts over the scene. Autumn in Zillertal: this is when nature reveals its richest treasures – and the region becomes a paradise for food lovers.

Alpine cheese, Alpine gold
All summer long, the cows graze on lush Alpine meadows – and their diet comes through in the flavour of the cheese. When the flower-adorned herds return to the valley in September for the traditional “Almabtrieb” (cattle drive), they bring more than just a festive mood: they carry the promise of aromatic cheese wheels. Whether enjoyed mild or fully matured, Zillertal Alpine cheese tells of mountain air and herb-filled meadows.

Local game
When the leaves turn, game season begins. Red deer, roe deer, and chamois arrive fresh on the plate – gently braised and served with lingonberries and bread dumplings. An autumn game dish is as much a part of Zillertal as the mountains themselves.

Pumpkins, apples, and more
Bright orange pumpkins, juicy apples, and aromatic herbs enrich every meal. Experience this bounty firsthand at the Zillertaler Bauern- & Musikherbst (a farmers’ and folk music festival) in Mayrhofen: local producers showcase their finest goods at the food and craft market, folk music fills the streets, and the scent of Zillertal Krapfen (fried pastries) and Melchermuas (a rich Alpine pan-fried dish) drifts across the square.
