Easter traditions in Tyrol

When the Tyrolean people prepare for Easter, the kitchen becomes a beehive of activity.

The Hotel Neue Post is one of the most traditional and, dare we say, best hotels in Mayrhofen. In Tyrol, traditions are very important and the Easter season, in particular, involves a variety of rituals, which mainly revolve around food. On Maundy Thursday (“Gründonnerstag”: Green Thursday), people typically eat something green, for instance spinach or wild garlic dishes. On Good Friday, fish, such as char, trout or zander, is served. Holy Saturday is the day for baking and Easter bread, sweet Easter lamb or braided white loaf are lovingly whipped up. In the evening, the big Easter fire is lit! Finally, on Easter Sunday, it is time for the spring and culinary awakening. After the long fasting period, it is now time to tuck in and feast on traditional Easter lamb, rabbit roast, Easter ham or similar delicatessen. The Easter eggs have been coloured, blessed during Easter mass and hidden in the garden; and children go on an Easter egg hunt! And you, how are you spending the Easter holidays? We wish you nothing but health in these tumultuous times and look forward to seeing you soon in Mayrhofen!
