When the leaves crunch under your hiking boots and traditional mountain hut snacks call your name, you know it’s the autumn hiking season in Zillertal!
Clear air, fair weather, and quiet trails make autumn the perfect season to ground yourself in nature and savour the true magic of Zillertal’s mountain huts. Check in at the Hotel Neue Post, lace up your boots, and step outside – many of the valley’s finest Alpine routes begin on our doorstep, with others just minutes away.
An enduring autumn favourite is the hike to the Gschösswandhaus mountain hut. From Mayrhofen, scenic switchbacks lead you to this rustic hut at 1,800 metres above sea level. At the top, panoramic views over the Zillertal reward your effort – best paired with “Kaspressknödelsuppe” (cheese bread dumpling soup) or a warm slice of apple strudel. The hospitable hosts and cosy interior make it a welcoming stop. For a relaxed finish to your day, skip the descent and glide back to the valley on the Penkenbahn cable car.
If you’re looking for a really relaxing hike, we recommend a trip to the Tristenbachalm in the Floitental valley. A kid-friendly path from Ginzling leads straight to the hut. After about an hour’s trek, you can settle onto the sun terrace with glacier views and enjoy a fresh glass of buttermilk and homemade cake. On select days, live music adds extra charm. As you make your way back, feel free to kick off your shoes, stroll barefoot along the stream, and relish a little cold-water Kneipp therapy.
Up for a challenge? Set your sights on the Kasseler mountain hut in Stilluptal. With almost 1,200 metres of ascent, it’s a demanding yet manageable hike. Up top, let your gaze roam all the way to the Greizer Kamm and refuel with hearty hut fare like beef soup and a trio of bread dumplings. Late autumn is blissfully quiet – perfect if you crave that mountain calm.
Back at the hotel, relax in the sauna or enjoy a glass of wine at the bar – and if you like, we’ll help you plan your next adventure. We’ve got a wealth of insider tips up our sleeve.
